Working with Recovery HD in MACOSx Lion

Mar 25, 2012   //   by NG   //   MacOSx Tips  //  No Comments

While working with Lion OSx you may sometimes find yourself in difficult situations like disk utility reported HD errors, file system is corrupt, etc etc. which requires you to boot your system in recovery mode. Now while working with one such situation when I found one of my jpeg file was found corrupt, I enquired disk utility and it reported “Incorrect number of file hard links” error, now when i tried rebooting Lion OSx in recovery HD mode using instructions provided by Apple i.e. Restart your mac and keep “command +R” pressed until Apple logo appears; now while dong this I always got stuck At grey screen with “no entry” signboard. It was a difficult situation but m good luck was that my HD was still working on normal reboot, so I did some research and found few solutions, please use them if found useful,

1. Make sure your EFI firmware is upto date, if your mac is 2010+ by using following link – http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Note: this is required in case you are interested in installing Lion directly from internet if you lost your HD

Lightroom has encountered problems reading this JPEG photo

Mar 25, 2012   //   by NG   //   Photography Tips  //  No Comments

In case you have encountered this error i.e. “Lightroom has encountered problems reading this JPEG photo“, then do following,

1. Run disk checker utility; if you are using Mac, then run disk utility and verify the disk, if you are lucky enough then disk utility will not display any error and you can proceed to next step, otherwise if it reports any error like “some bad sectors”, then you need to take immediate action, which should be taking backup of your files and fixing the disk error (for mac users, check my article to use Recovery HD on Lion)

Trekking – Checklist of things to carry…

Mar 13, 2012   //   by NG   //   Useful Travel Tips  //  No Comments

Before cursing yourself on treks for not packing what should have been packed and instead inflating your sack with junk! Below is a checklist which describe things that should be carried on your shoulders, for e.g. a day-trek in Sahyadri.

Water – A must! Along with at least a litre bottle, preferably also a smaller bottle hidden somewhere, for emergency.

First Aid – Dettol, cotton, micropore bandage (you can wrap it quickly and it stays in place when you walk), antiseptic powder (Cipladine is my favourite), pain relief spray (I prefer Relispray), pain relief tablet (Crocin / Anacin), mild ointment (Kailas Jeeven is the best), Glucon-D.

Eatables – Dates (soaked in Ghee!) give you energy. Lemon and salt. Corn (shallow fried or cooked). Grated Amla (and salted.. umm… yummy!). Parle Glucose biscuits provide ready energy when taken with water.

IOS 5.1 upgrade error: This device is not eligible for the requested build

Mar 11, 2012   //   by NG   //   IOS and iPhone Tips  //  No Comments

While upgrading IOS 5.1 on my iphone 4S via iTunes 10.6 (relased specificly for new ipad 3and IOS 5.1), I faced error as “This device is not eligible for the requested build” . My iphone was not jailbroken and is running absolutely fine, even the inbuilt (Settings > General > Software Update) ios upgrade was not working, so I went to Apple online help and find troubleshooting tips on link under section “Specific error messages and resolutions”.

I figured out that error I was facing was due to hosts file issue, as per apple –  If you have installed software to perform unauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the “gs.apple.com” redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect.  For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart. Also, using an older or modified .ipsw file can cause this issue. Try moving the current .ipsw file, or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.

To modify hosts file, follow following guidelines provided by Apple,
